U16 Boys win Ashman (Hampshire) Cup
On a hot bank holiday Monday 7th May, the u16 boys competed in the Ashman (Hants) Cup final against big rivals Fareham.
The boys went into this game on the back of 3 consecutive narrow losses to Fareham over the last season or so and were definitely going to give it all that they had.
The game couldn’t started better for the boys and within the first few minutes they were 1-0 up from a Will Whitmore goal. The rest of the first half was tightly contested and Winchester were relieved to remain 1-0 up at the end of the first half following some brave defensive work from Huw Lansdowne, Ollie Green, Frank Struthers, Will Evans, tireless leg work from Will Jackson and Oscar Moores and some excellent saves from Felix Northover in goal.
Winchester dominated the first part of the second half and following some dynamic passing moves from Giles Hocking and Charlie Johnson in midfield Winchester won and scored a Rory Penrose short corner to make the game 2-0. This was quickly followed by another short corner deflected in by Josh Fiske to make it 3-0. However, as the boys well know, Fareham are never beaten until the final whistle blows, and in a 7 minute spell of fast attacking play and a lapse in concentration from Winchester, Fareham pulled the game back to 3-3.
The game remained tight for the next five minutes, but after much hard work and tireless running from James Baxter Winchester won and scored a well worked short corner goal from Will Whitmore and were back in the lead at 4-3.
A nerve wracking few minutes played out with Fareham unable to score and the game ended 4-3 to Winchester.
