U14 Girls vs Trojans – won 4-1. League champions!!!!

March 26th, 2017,

On a sunny day at Kings, with a few missing at county matches, a strong squad of 14 wrapped up the league for Winchester with a convincing win against Trojans. Starting brightly, with Meggie running well down the right wing, and Sarah and Aisling working hard at inside forward, we dominated the first 20 minutes. Their goalkeeper was in superb form however, and despite some good crosses and far post positioning, we just couldn’t get the ball into the goal. Finally Aisling scored a well worked goal at the left post after good approach play from Sarah and Flora. Puja and Finty were looking comfortable at the back, with Emily and Elspeth at half back pressing their markers and passing the ball down the lines well, so it was a bit of a surprise that with their first attack of the game we allowed the ball to run through to their centre forward who scored too easily. Claudia then cleared well a few times after a couple of further attacks.

More chances for WHC then went begging so despite playing pretty well it was 1-1 at the break. The second half saw Winchester pick up the pace, after we instructed higher tempo and more accurate passing. Flora was dominating the middle with some excellent tackling and early distribution, so that all our forwards, Grace L, Anastasia, Martha, together with Elspeth and Sarah who had been pushed further forward, were starting to find space and attack at will. Ruby had come on, together with Charlie, up from the U12’s, which allowed our more attacking players to press. Their county keeper then made a series of excellent saves, to cap her excellent first half performance, but after a period of intense pressure and a few goalmouth scrambles we scored a terrific goal with Flora striking it really hard into the corner from the top of the D. This calmed any nerves, and the pressure and quality of our play then improved further. A goal bound shot from Aisling was stopped with a foot, Flora confidently converting the resultant penalty stroke, and with Finty and Sarah working the right hand side we were finding our high forwards well. After a couple of practice efforts, Grace L then scored a great goal after pushing high into their D. Again their keeper then saved 3 chances well, and we missed an open goal in the last seconds, but we will take a good 4-1 win!!! This showed the strength in depth in the club today, with at least 8 players missing. Well done to all the team, and for everyone who has represented the U14’s this year. I think we have had 40 different players turning out for the club – great stuff. Squad: Claudia LP, Puja, Finty, Ruby, Emily, Flora (2) , Charlie, Sarah, Aisling (1), Elspeth, Meggie, Grace L (1), Anastasia, Martha.

Kind regards
