Wessex U-16 – Ashman Cup Final – Match Report
At Hampshire Finals day at Haslemere, Winchester played Trojans, a team who were league champions. The coach decided on a defensive start, with Howard Chaplin-White in goal, a back 3 of Toby Cooke, Dion Tsouranamis and Harry Rivett. The midfield 5 of Jack Francis, Scott Matthew, Tom Bolam, Dan Hemingway and Patrick Daly were told to lie deep and attack down the 2 flanks with the roaming forwards of Leyth Hampshire and Tom Chenhall. This lasted 5 minutes, before Winchester had good midfield possession and started to dominate (and forgo the strategy). Tom Bolam picked up the ball just inside his own half, found Tom Chenhall at inside right who hit to the left hand post where Lyeth Hampshire popped up to score. Then Tom Chenhall had a powerful reverse hit well saved by the Trojans keeper high to his right. Then Trojans started to slip the odd tackle and with an innocuous hit from the right hand touchline by the 23m line, the Trojans forward attempted to stop the ball in the D on the reverse, but instead the ball ricocheted off his stick past Howard who was moving to cover the next shot. In the second half Trojans moved the ball around better, but found the England U-16 keeper, Caelan Dillon, in no mood to concede another. However, a number of penalty corners followed their sustained attacks and Trojans finally found the net with a good drag low to Caelan’s left post. Another short corner followed, which James Bisson somehow reverse-hooked off the line after it had beaten Caelan top right. Winchester rolled their substitutes, with Alex Sampford and Tom Dainton contributing well in attack and Ryan Carey robust in defence, but Trojans held firm. Final Score 1-2. This time the jelly babies and leadership and dynamism of Captain Patrick Daly were not enough to claw a goal back (and the full crowd of parents and Winchester stalwarts were so looking forward to a PF competition at the end of a long finals day) … So to next year

Winchester 2 – Troajns 5
Winchester hosted Trojans at Kings for their Wessex league match on a warm and sunny day, which brought out a good crowd to watch a very skilful and hard fought match. Trojans started the stronger with a number of attacks that tested the defence of Dion Tsouranamis, Toby Cooke and James Bisson, with Rory McCallum being required to make some smart saves. From an innocuous hit into the D, Trojans got a lucky deflection off a Winchester stick for the first goal. 10 minutes later a good run by Danny Rawlings, with support from Captain and birthday boy Patrick Daly, released Alex Sampford who beat one defender before calmly passing the ball into the bottom RH corner. Winchester then had a successsion of attacks before half time; Tom Dainton to Jack Francis to Scott Matthew who just missed; then a quickly taken ball from the right sideline into Tom Bolam who found Leyth Hampshire who passed to Scott Matthew who rounded the keeper only for a Trojans foot to save on the line. Unfortunately the PF was saved. Trojans regrouped after half time and played some good hockey down the right, pressing the Winchester defence back. They reacted quickest to tangle on the 23m and had an easy route into the D on the right byeline with a flick past Rory. 3 minutes later, again with Winchester not clearing from the back, Trojans turned the ball and another simple goal 1-3. Continuing to press, Trojans were able to to get to the bye line and despite Rory and Ryan Carey covering, somehow the ball squirmed under the goalies body into the net. From the defensive, Winchester regrouped and began passing the ball round Trojans rather than trying to go through them. Dan Hemingway had a shot wide and Ollie Haydon gave his all, coming off bloodied but unbowed. As both sides tired with a few minutes to go, firstly Winchester gave the ball away in midfield which Trojans swiftly converted, then Dion Tsouranamis intercepted a Trojans pass and hit it straight into the D, where Lyeth Hamsphire drifted in from the right wing and deflected the ball in with almost the last touch of the match.

11th March 2012
Winchester 5 – Haslemere 1
Winchester hosted Haslemere for their Wessex league match. Despite both teams missing key players due to County matches , there was a good crowd to watch a close fought match. Haslemere started the stronger with a number of attacks that tested the defence of Will Hurrell, Will Bryan and Dion Tsouranamis, with the ever vigilant Caelan Dillon in goal to clear if required. The first attack by Winchester saw Tom Chenhall charge through midfield, releasing Ollie Haydon on the left wing who got to the by line and passed across the face of the goal for an easy tap in for Alex Sampford. Within a minute, Josh Keaveney struck a solid ball into the D that the Halsemere goalie could only parry back to Ollie Haydon, who bundled it over the line. Toby Lelliott had a good shot saved and Alex Sampford had another strong run from halfway down the left wing to win a SC, but no goal resulted. The next goal was perfect hockey; from right back, Mike Phillips passed to Patrick Daly at right half, who switched it left to Tom Dainton, who passed quickly forward to Tom Chenhall, who released Alex Sampford who maisied into the D and calmly slotted it into the goal – 4 passes, no dribbling, simples. Haslemere started the second half with more purpose and despite heoric defending by Andy Pickett, Caelan was beaten at the third attempt. Winchester came back immediately, with some more quick passing hockey; this time Dan Jelliffe to Patrick Daly to Tom Chenhall back to Patrick who ran into the D on the right hand side and rifled it into the net at head height giving the goalie no chance. After some good play by Jack Francis, a well taken SC resulted in a goal for Dan Jelliffe. Then Leyth Hamsphire drifted in from the right wing, across the top of the D and reverse hit for the goalie to save well. So it ended 5 -1.

However Winchester may be able to purchase tickets via a pre sale arrangement in a block booking before then. The price for presale block bookings are Child £5 and Adults £10. The seats offered in the presale are reserved for block booking (so not the very best seats in the house) but good nonetheless. If you would like me to try and include you in a block booking for session 2 on Saturday 5th May 2012, then please email me at mkeaveney@btinternet.com before Friday 9th March 2012 and confirm number of seats and type (adult, child).
If this doesnt work out then the 9th March 2012 deadline still leaves you time to perosna;lly purchase tickets when they are sold to the general public on 15th March 2012.
If we do a block booking I will then arrange for you to pay me for the tickets in the next week or so and you can collect the tickets from me in Winchester (usually issued 5 days before the event).
In terms of getting there, you will have to make your own arrangements but it is relatively simple to get the train from Winchester to Waterloo and then the Jubilee Line straight to Stratford. Child return circa £15. Adult return circa £30.
PLEASE NOTE: There are engineering works on Sunday 6th May 2012, which means using a bus replacement service from Winchester to Basingstoke SO Saturday seems to be the best option.

U-16 Boys EH Cup – Winchester vs Fareham
Match Report
U16 Boys EH Cup
Winchester U16A Boys vs Fareham U16
12th February 2012
Winchester 1 – Fareham 6
With changes to the schedule and venue due to the weather, Winchester eventually hosted a full strength Fareham for their last round of EH Cup matches. Despite a number of key players missing due to half term, there was a good crowd to watch an intially close fought match. After 8 minutes Fareham penetrated the D, with defenders James Bisson and Harry Rivett following coaches instruction to stand off, the attacker snapped a reverse stick shot which beat Caelan Dillon in goal. Just before half time, Fareham scored a second with a well taken drag shot from the top of the D, leaving Caelan no chance. Winchester struck back a few minutes later, following a shot wide by Tom Bolam, when Danny Rawlings rode a couple of strong challenges to reverse hit into the roof. Expecting the game to continue in the same close fashion, and despite some heroics from Andy Pickett and Dan Jelliffe, the Winchester supporters were disappointed when Fareham were able to make it 3, then 4-1, early in the second half. Although there was some good by individual play, Winchester never really got into passing, flowing team hockey ( or maybe Fareham denied them the opportunity?), with Dan Hemingway, Alex Sampford, Ollie Haydon and Jack Francis all thwarted (despite a great shot by Jack that the keeper saved high to his left). In the last few minutes, despite Tom Dainton and Will Nash tussling, Winchester let Fareham in to score a couple of easy goals. Jem Evans summed it up – Winchester were too middle class and need to scrap like Fareham for the ball.
Match Report – U-16 Boys vs Bournemouth – 5 Feb

Winchester U16A Boys vs Bournemouth U16
5th February 2012
Winchester 2 – Bournemouth 2
Winchester braved the snow and ice to travel to Bournemouth for their Wessex league match. Despite both teams missing key players to the weather, there was a good crowd to watch a close fought match. An uneventful first 15 minutes passed with neither team having a shot on target or a short corner. The first of the latter, however, fell to Winchester and Tom Chenhall dummied the number 1 runner and sent a crisp shot into the right hand corner. Bournemouth pressed but the midfield of Patrick Daly, Dan Hemingway and Jack Francis thwarted their attacks. On the few occasions that Bournemouth managed to get through, the defence of Tom Dainton, Harry Rivett, Ryan “Riz” Carey and Will Nash cleared to safety. Caelan Dillon made one very good double handed save from a rasping undercut shot. However, straight from the start of the second half Bournemouth charged forward in numbers and a short corner followed. Caelan “my coach says leave the corners for the defenders” Dillon was beaten with a well taken drag low down, as Harry “my coach says clear off the pads” Rivett came away from the post. But minutes later Winchester broke quickly with rapid passing from back to front through Dan Hemingway and Tom Chenall to Alex Sampford who took it into the D and hit it hard. The goalie saved but Alex dived to sweep the rebound in 2-1. Leyth Hampshire and Ollie Haydon continued to find space on the wings, but Bournemouth were also playing well down both flanks. A further Short Corner followed which Caelan saved with Harry guarding the post, but this time Bournemouth scored from the rebound. Play was end-to-end with both goalkeepers making futher saves, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, so final result was 2-2.
