At Hampshire Finals day at Haslemere, Winchester played Trojans, a team who were league champions. The coach decided on a defensive start, with Howard Chaplin-White in goal, a back 3 of Toby Cooke, Dion Tsouranamis and Harry Rivett. The midfield 5 of Jack Francis, Scott Matthew, Tom Bolam, Dan Hemingway and Patrick Daly were told to lie deep and attack down the 2 flanks with the roaming forwards of Leyth Hampshire and Tom Chenhall. This lasted 5 minutes, before Winchester had good midfield possession and started to dominate (and forgo the strategy). Tom Bolam picked up the ball just inside his own half, found Tom Chenhall at inside right who hit to the left hand post where Lyeth Hampshire popped up to score. Then Tom Chenhall had a powerful reverse hit well saved by the Trojans keeper high to his right. Then Trojans started to slip the odd tackle and with an innocuous hit from the right hand touchline by the 23m line, the Trojans forward attempted to stop the ball in the D on the reverse, but instead the ball ricocheted off his stick past Howard who was moving to cover the next shot. In the second half Trojans moved the ball around better, but found the England U-16 keeper, Caelan Dillon, in no mood to concede another. However, a number of penalty corners followed their sustained attacks and Trojans finally found the net with a good drag low to Caelan’s left post. Another short corner followed, which James Bisson somehow reverse-hooked off the line after it had beaten Caelan top right. Winchester rolled their substitutes, with Alex Sampford and Tom Dainton contributing well in attack and Ryan Carey robust in defence, but Trojans held firm. Final Score 1-2. This time the jelly babies and leadership and dynamism of Captain Patrick Daly were not enough to claw a goal back (and the full crowd of parents and Winchester stalwarts were so looking forward to a PF competition at the end of a long finals day) … So to next year

22nd April 2012

Winchester 7 – Petersfield 7 – Winchester won on PFs

Winchester hosted Petersfield at Kings in the SF of the Ashman (Hants) Cup. Despite a number of key players missing due to Umpire courses and D of E, Winchester were hopeful of progressing to the next round. The coach decided that jelly babies were the key to success, and after a few each, started with a goal in 2 minutes as Captain Patrick Daly passed to Tom Chenhall in the D who got the ball to Leyth Hampshire who scored at the second attempt. A few minutes later a similar situation ended up with multiple saves by the keeper and no goal. Petersfield then started attacking and a good run from midfield into the D ended bizarrely with the Petersfield player kicking the ball at Howard Chaplin-White who let it by, only for the umpire to award a goal. Winchester had more attacks, leading to a good drive by Patrick Daly who hit it into the D for Dan Hemingway to score. Petersfield responded well and drove down the right baseline to win a short corner; despite Howard saving the first shot well, a good hit from the deflection went in, 2-2. A few minutes before half time, Petersfield had an attack down the right which was hit hard across the D and smartly slapped in for 3-2. The second half, after a top up of jelly babies, started poorly, with Petersfield being given too many chances. The back four of James Bisson, Dion Tsouramanis, Ryan Carey and Harry Rivett had no outlets and Petersfield seemed to have players over left and right. Within 10 minutes they were 6-2 up. Winchester put away a short on 20 minutes, but let Petersfield in 2 minutes later for 3-7. Then, either the inspiration of Captain Patrick Daly, a change of formation or, most likely, a sugar rush, transformed Winchester. Stringing passes from the back, through the midfiled of Tom Bolam, Scott Matthew, Patrick Daly, and Tom Dainton ended with a simple strike by Patrick Daly, that the keeper failed to keep out, 4-7. Even then, with only 5 minutes to go, the Petersfield supporters were confident. Wingers Leyth Hampshire and Jack Francis (with an earlier game under their belt) on the right and Alex Sampford on the left spread the play. On 33 minutes a SC led to a PF which was put away by Tom Bolam, 5-7; a minute later another SC was superbly struck by Tom again, 6-7. With nothing left on the clock, a panicky Petersfield, under pressure from the push back, promptly put the ball out on the left touchline. Intricate play down the left along the baseline led to Dan Hemingway putting the ball in with seconds remaining. A stunned crowd (both sides) then settled down for the PFs. The first pair of flicks were scored – the next 2 were missed by Winchester and Petersfield’s efforts were well saved by Howard C-W, s0 1-1 with 2 to go. Alex Sampford scored his and Petersfield missed, leaving Dion Tsouramanis to secure an unlikely victory with a well taken flick.

In the Hants Cup, an extremely close semi final match against Trojans saw Trojans grab a fortuitous equaliser and managed to hold on to the state of equilibrium. In penalties, Trojans managed to score the final flick – winning 10-9 on flicks to go through to the final.

And in the league, a commanding performance, playing carefully balanced sides to opposition but managing to steer an exacting course to the second consecutive league win. Well done to all who played. Andy.
