South Saxons bring the silver back home
After an epic weekend of hockey up in Nottingham, it is with great pleasure that I can congratulate Freddie Coulson, Henry Crompton, Oliver Gage, Oliver Lander and Felix Northover who, along with the rest of the South Saxons squad, brought the silver back to its spiritual home in the south.
The three day tournament brought out some really great hockey with a high standard shown across all the teams who came together from all over the U.K.
After an initial bumpy start losing their first match on Friday evening, the South Saxons team then won all three of the remaining matches in the draw taking them to a semi final against the West team. The match was a true nail biter ending 2:2 at the final whistle. The South Saxons came out the winners, the result being decided with penalty shuffles.
That brought us to a final against Ulster on Sunday afternoon.
After the first goal fell to Ulster, the supporters got warmed up with cheering and song and the South Saxons team got over any initial nerves. In a match of 2x 25 mins, the South Saxons, (a.k.a The boys in white) won 3:1 in a performance which showed how the team had bonded over the weekend, how they never sat back and how they played excellent hockey as a team.
Thank you to all the organisers, coaches, the manager, parents, sponsors and especially the South Saxons team themselves for making this weekend such a great success.
