U14 Girls Hampshire Cup Final

May 2nd, 2017,

Hampshire Cup – v Fareham lost 2-1

A disappointing result at Aldershot today. Despite a strong start and an early goal finished with aplomb by Izzy after a breakaway, Fareham exerted too much pressure throughout the match to allow our normal high quality passing game to develop. A great second chance after about 10 minutes went begging, and that knocked our confidence and gave Fareham real belief they could stay in the game. Our defending at times looked a bit ragged, although Claudia in goal played superbly to clear numerous chances, but the inevitable equaliser came midway through the half to leave us at 1-1 at half time. There were just too many passes going astray and as the game became increasingly more end to end, Fareham’s pressure started to mount. Grace H saved a certain goal with an amazing reflex stop with a hand, that resulted in only a corner, and Chessie tackled bravely against numerous attacks. We still just could not get the ball into our midfield and wide to the wingers with any consistency, and the game developed into a slightly scrappy match which suited Fareham’s pressing play. The defining few minutes of the match came with about 5 minutes to go – a Winchester breakaway against the run of play saw us pass round the keeper but miss the post with a hit from 10 metres, and a couple of minutes later Fareham scored a scrambled goal when we just didn’t close down the attacker in the D.

A shame to have finished what has been a great season on a low note, but the girls did wonderfully well to reach the final and will have learned from the experience. We didn’t play well and Fareham deserved their victory, but despite heavy pressure we stuck at it and on another day chances might have gone our way.
