U’10 boys winning ways at Petersfield

February 27th, 2012

Another sunny Sunday and another tournament this time played on a splendid new astro and in a delightful setting at Petersfield. The coaches were watching closely to try and refine the tricky decisions as to who to select for the Nationals competition next week. The boys squad of 12 were all raring to go and did not disappoint notching up 5 victories in 6 games.

Out of the blocks they scored 6 against Havant; Rory scoring an early hatrick. With 5 different players out of 7 it was a 4-0 win against Petersfield next and a harder fought 2-1 win against Portsmouth; the usual suspects James, both Wills and Oscar getting on the score sheet through a mix of individual skill and excellent positional play. A hiccup against a Basingstoke team with two very fast and skilful passers was followed by two more wins against Fareham (3-0) and Chichester (2-0). Ewan proved he has learned about positioning and was able to slot home two close range goals to his evident delight.

Meanwhile the defenders Reece, Olly and Sam were as solid as ever in defence leaking only 3 goals throughout. In Midfield Sammy, Frank and Jack were like terriers, chasing down the ball and tackling fiercely to feed the strikers and control the opposition. Overall it was an impressive performance which earned admiring comments from other team’s Coaches. Very pleasing for all concerned but the selection dilemma remains for us as we choose a 7 boy team for the Nationals. Watch this space for details and well done to everyone.

MATCH REPORT U12 GIRLS VS SOUTHAMPTON: Win 7 -5 Sunday 26 February 2012

February 26th, 2012

Match Report – Home vs Southampton (Win 7:5)

As the heat haze began to shimmer above the astro-turf of Bar End, the tension mounted as Captain Scarlett and her team shook out into yellow and purple attack formation and prepared to do battle. Yes, it is still the middle of winter, and yes, we were about to embark on an unseasonably warm U12 girls’ hockey match.

As the season has progressed, the tempo and accuracy of passing has improved steadily and today, all seemed to come together – for both Winchester and Southampton. Encouraged by the warm weather, and the warmth of the capacity crowd, the match set off at break-neck speed, and the scoring was opened by Annabelle Budd after a long cross from inside forward Miranda Dibden on the left. Play ebbed and flowed, Chloe Lewin and Scarlett Atkinson controlling the centre-field for the most part. Southampton pulled one back quickly to even the contest and then, in an uncharacteristic kerfuffle in the goal mouth, they stepped up with a well-executed short corner in which the Winchester defence seemed momentarily fixed and failed to run out.

Some beautifully flowing play continued up and down the pitch, both teams challenging, but only Winchester managing to finish at first. The score was evened when Phoebe Burdett judged a real gem of a hit from the 16 yard line, which carried to the Southampton D, allowing Kitty Watts at Centre Forward to capitalise with a cracking shot on goal. Winchester then edged ahead, first with a lovely passing move from Miranda to Annabelle Budd which was clinically finished by Alice Ridley. Another came from a short corner, well drilled, and hit by Miranda; bouncing off the keepers pads and then pushed over the line by Annabel Blandford’s stick propelled by Annabelle Budd’s hit – work that one out – half a goal each then. A series of beguiling moves from the Southampton forwards brought sustained pressure as the ball moved smoothly around the pitch and came perilously close to the Winchester goal on several occasions. Iona McColl and Millie Burdett seemed to be everywhere, running back to defend and then helping to build the counter-offensive in the mid-field. Again and again, Southampton pushed to the Winchester D only to have Annabelle Woodman and Phoebe always in place to parry the thrust.

As the game eased into its final phase, Alice scored twice more on the break, alternating with goals from Southampton to bring the score to 6:4. Annabelle Budd poached another from a scrabble in the Southampton goal mouth, and Southampton came back yet again with some superb play to get their fifth past Issy Paget, who certainly had a rigorous work out in goal, saving many more than slipped past, and those in the form of several great finishing shots.

This was probably the most entertaining and fast paced match of the season, which Winchester won on determination and finishing power. Their 7 goals were the result of a fabulous team effort from all, and the 5 conceded were testament to the skill of an excellent and worthy set of opponents.

Team: Annabelle Budd (2 ½ ), Annabelle Woodman, Annabel Blandford ( ½ ), Phoebe Burdett, Millie Burdett, Chloe Lewin, Kitty Watts (1), Iona McColl, Scarlett Atkinson, Miranda Dibden, Alice Ridley (3), Issy Paget (GK).

U10s Tournament Match Report – Girls Team

February 26th, 2012

Today with the sun shining and lovely blue skies, the u10s girls took part in a tournament in Petersfield. This is the first time that we entered a separate boy and girl team and there was a lot of determination and effort from the girls as they tackled various mixed boy/girl teams. Despite losing all the games, it was wonderful to see all the skills we have been working on coming through and the progression in play during the tournament. The improvement in confidence and play as the games progressed was lovely to watch! The girls should all be very proud of themselves! Well done to Finty, Izzy, Megan, Meggie, Pollyanna, Lulu, Francesca, Abby, Heidi, Harriet, Grace, Talia and Liv!

Our first game was against Basingstoke who was a very strong team with a particularly strong hitter who managed to score 4 goals. As the game progressed, our defence managed to divert more goals as they gained confidence in their tackling and Francesca scored a super goal with some lovely passing up the field by Finty and Pollyanna. Our next 2 games against Havant 1 and Chichester saw our defence become even stronger with more determined tackles, more accurate passing amongst the midfield and forwards and despite some lovely runs towards the goal, we were unable to score.

Playing against Portsmouth and Petersfield, we were narrowly beaten losing both games 1-0 but all the girls played extremely well. Abby, Francesca and Pollyanna were very strong in defence and Grace and Talia were solid in their defence at the back. The forwards improved their passing and driving forward with the ball with some lovely runs towards the goal by Finty. In our last game, we faced Havant 2 and despite losing 3-1, the girls played great hockey with Francesca scoring another super goal.

Throughout the tournament, I saw some good skills and lots of improvement in passing, hitting, clearing the ball and tackling from each and every player! Thank you to all the parents for their super support of the girls from the sidelines! Well done again girls!

U18′s cruise to Round 3 of EH Plate competition

February 13th, 2012

Winchester v Surbiton U18’s: Won 10 – 0

Home at Bar End for this 2nd Round EH Plate match, Winchester started at pace and right from the beginning simply delivered non-stop pressure hockey onto the Surbiton defence. Kieran Malloy opened the scoring, shortly followed by Matt Potter, then a cracking Luke Cole goal, all from open play, before Kieran scored his second just before halftime. In the second half, the plucky Surbiton side continued to battle out of their defence, but even when breaking out through the Winchester midfield, were calmly dispossessed by Robbie Hadfield, Chris Wiseman and Simon Craig in defence, ensuring that Howard Chaplin White, playing his first U18 match in goal, was rarely troubled.

Excellent tackling and calm determined play by Sam Broadhurst, Jamie Rawlings, Nigel Lucas and Sam Francis in the midfield, delivered a consistent flow of great passes to the forwards, who steadily increased the lead; two further goals by Matt Potter, three by Kieran, and a great deflection by Jamie Brooke completed a commanding performance from the Winchester side. Although an emphatic win, due credit to the Surbiton GK, who must also have made in excess of forty saves in this match.

U12 Boys 6 v Chichester 2

February 12th, 2012

Winchester 6  Chichester 2

In true football commentator style: a game of 3 thirds.

In the first third, Chichester pressed strongly and were rewarded with the single goal.  Winchester, despite not having to travel and having had ample opportunity to warm-up, just lacked something.  We learnt what that was when John Rivett produced the jelly babies at the end of the first 20 minutes.

In the second third Winchester slotted 4 home and were unlucky not get more; in the words of the Chichester coach, the home side was superb and awesome.  Isaac Hocking and Will Penrose each scored twice; noticeable was the ball speed, upped from the first third: the passing was so much better.  In defence Henry Cobb played strongly, crunching tackles combined with great distribution – showing why, by the end of the match he was selected as the team’s ‘man of the match’.  Toby Rivett heeded the team talk marking the opposition’s main player so that he had no impact in the game in this session.

In the third third, Chichester again started strongly.  Their key player slotting home a goal from an incredible angle at the near post after a great solo run.  This only rallied Winchester though.  Hugh Quail scoring, but his goal being disallowed; he made up for it shortly afterwards by finding the backboard again from an unselfish ball from James Bryan.  Midfield and forwards pressed strongly: Jack Thistlethwayte (hot from the Rose Bowl), Toby Rivett, Isaac Hocking, Jack Stebbing, James Bryan and Zac Caldwell all wanting part of the action.  At the back Sam Green, Lawrence Sofflet, Jasper Moores and Henry Cobb repelled any Chichester attack.  Rarely was Adam McClenaghan called into action, but when required he kicked strongly.  The 6th goal came with superb run by Isaac Hocking who must have covered most 50 yards+ in the last quarter of the pitch.

A really great game to watch, enjoyed by both players and their parents.  So we now know what we need for the players to up their game: jelly babies.

U-16 Boys EH Cup – Winchester vs Fareham

February 12th, 2012

Match Report

U16 Boys EH Cup

Winchester U16A Boys vs Fareham U16

12th February 2012

Winchester 1 – Fareham 6

With changes to the schedule and venue due to the weather, Winchester eventually hosted a full strength Fareham for their last round of EH Cup matches.  Despite a number of key players missing due to half term, there was a good crowd to watch an intially close fought match.  After 8 minutes Fareham penetrated the D, with defenders James Bisson and Harry Rivett following coaches instruction to stand off,  the attacker snapped a reverse stick shot which beat Caelan Dillon in goal.  Just before half time, Fareham scored a second with a well taken drag shot from the top of the D, leaving Caelan no chance.  Winchester struck back a few minutes later, following a shot wide by Tom Bolam, when Danny Rawlings rode a couple of strong challenges to reverse hit into the roof.  Expecting the game to continue in the same close fashion, and despite some heroics from Andy Pickett and Dan Jelliffe, the Winchester supporters were disappointed when Fareham were able to make it 3, then 4-1, early in the second half.  Although there was some good by individual play, Winchester never really got into passing, flowing team hockey ( or maybe Fareham denied them the opportunity?), with Dan Hemingway, Alex Sampford, Ollie Haydon and Jack Francis all thwarted (despite a great shot by Jack that the keeper saved high to his left).  In the last few minutes, despite Tom Dainton and Will Nash tussling, Winchester let Fareham in to score a couple of easy goals.  Jem Evans summed it up – Winchester were too middle class and need to scrap like Fareham for the ball.
