MATCH REPORT U12 GIRLS VS YATELEY WIN 4-1, SUNDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2011
GIRLS U12 HOCKEY VS YATELEY (AWAY)
Win: 4 – 1
The Winchester girls’ first run out this season was at Wellington College against a noticeably taller Yateley team. Played in 4 quarters, in warm sunshine, this offered the opportunity for a number of debut performances, with 9 of the 14 squad members playing a full size game for the first time.
Winchester’s approach could best be described as determined, with the bulk of the first half play at the Yateley end. Goals came, 1 in the first quarter and 2 in the second, from Miranda Dibden doing what a centre forward does best. Captain Scarlett Atkinson held the centre of the pitch throughout, dominating the play and setting the tempo while the defence, with Catherine Thomson at its centre, kept all counter attacks at bay.
In the 3rd quarter, a Yateley break down the left wing pulled one goal back, but this was quickly countered by Chloe Lewin who, having handed over the goal keeping to Annabel Blandford, promptly scored from a solo run. Only in the final quarter did Yateley begin to get the upper hand with one shot on goal unfortunately disallowed, and the match culminated in a series of 6 short corners that Winchester simply could not clear. Dogged defence won out in the end though, with Annabel Blandford’s athletic performance in goal more than a match for the lack of Yateley finishing ability.
Hard work across the board, and some impressive stamina, bodes well for the future: a very creditable performance from all, and an excellent start to the season.
